Roof Patch

Video Clip of Segment

Well, here we are up on the roof that's over our patio down below. Now this is a flat roof. It's called a built-up roof. Ours is not built up enough. It's sort of torn down, and, as you can see, we have a problem. I'm going to make a temporary repair. If you had a roof that was in better shape, you could make a permanent repair like I'm going to do. First of all, the roof is made out of plywood underneath. It's got roofing paper over the top of that, roofing compound and then the gravel is on top of that. And the first thing we need to do is to scrape the gravel away where we're going to put our patch. Now, our next step is to take some of this black asphalt roofing compound and smear it over the entire area here. It's messy, but it does a really good job. And once we've got enough of the black guck here we put a fiberglass mesh in here. It comes in rolls, and you just cut it off to the right size, which we've already done, and we're going to embed that in the guck here. Now we're going to come back over and put some more of this stuff on the top of the mesh. It's not a thing of beauty and it will not last forever. But it will get us through the next rainstorm.
