Home Repair Projects: How to Repair Gutters

Materials

  • Wire brush or rust remover
  • Asphalt roofing cement or gutter seal
  • Metal patches

Step-by-Step

  1. Remove all rust and loose metal around the holes in the gutter you are going to repair. Use a wire brush and rust remover.
  2. Cover pinpoint holes with a dab of asphalt roofing cement or gutter sealer. Cover larger holes with a metal patch held in place by either of these compounds. Seal the edges from the top as well.
  3. Seal leaks at joints with the same compounds.
  4. After the compound sets up, paint over the bare metal to seal again future rust and to make the patch blend into the rest of the gutter.
