Lighting Projects: Installing a Remote Lighting System
NOTE: These instructions assume that you already have a remote lighting system purchased and are ready to install it.

Preparation
Before beginning any electrical project, be sure to turn off the power off at the breaker box. Also, if you have no experience working with electricity, please hire a professional.

Materials

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver

Step-by-Step

  1. Once the power is off at the breaker box, remove the screws holding the existing face plate to your switches. It doesn’t matter if the switches are dimmers, rocker switches, or traditional flip switches. The remote lighting face plate will cover any style.
  2. On our Lutron remote control switch, it’s made as a stand-alone switch, so it can be mounted in the wall anywhere. But, where there is a gang of switches, you need to remove the faceplate off the switch. Once the faceplate is off, use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the switch you are going to replace. Once you’ve pulled the old switch out of the wall socket, pay close attention to where the wires are connected.

TIP: The green wire on the switch is always the grounding wire.

  3. You’ll be reconnecting the wires to the same positions on the new switch. Every new switch comes with detailed wiring instructions. Be sure to follow them closely. Locate the grounding wire inside the socket in the wall. In our example, the grounding wire is uninsulated copper, and all the other ground wires from the other switches are connected to it.
  4. Twist the ground wire from the new switch together with the others and secure them with the electrical screw.
  5. Connect the hot and neutral wires on the new switch to the hot and neutral wires in the wall.
  6. Twist them together and fasten them in with electrical screws.
  7. Once you have attached the wires and tightened the electrical screws, tuck all the wiring back into the wall.
  8. Screw the new remote switch onto the wall mount.
  9. Put the old face place back on.
  10. Even though it has a remote control, you can use it like any ordinary wall switch, plus it has the advantage of having a built-in dimmer switch as well. You can also get a simple plug- in dimmer switch you can attach to any lamp. This gives you the flexibility of a full dimmer so you can adjust the lamp anywhere from low for lounging to full light for reading.
