Wood Stud Shelter Specifications
ROOF SLAB
The roof of this shelter is constructed by securing 4 ft. of 8 ft. sheets of
16 ga. expanded metal and 3/4 in. Plywood to the bottom and side of 2x6 ceiling
joists. The expanded metal and plywood shall be nailed securely with 3 in. nails
at in. O.C. along each joist. A 4" slab of concrete is placed in the space
between the ceiling joists. The ceiling joists, spaced at 16" O.C., shall
be anchored to the wall studs by means of 1/2-0 carriage bolts - two per
joists.
WALLS
Secure 4x8 sheets of 16 ga. the walls of
the shelter shall be constructed of 2x4 timber studs spaced at
16" O.C. Expanded metal and ¾" plywood on the interior of the
wall. The exterior wall shall be covered with ¾" Plywood. Nail
plywood securely to studs with 3". Nails at 4" O.C. the
plywood shall extend to the top of the ceiling joists and
shall be nailed to the end of each joist. The void space
between the studs shall be filled with concrete to the top of
the wall. Although, it is preferable to fill the entire wall
cavity with one pour, this is not crucial. It is crucial that
there be no large voids left in the wall cavity.
DOOR OPENING
Door frames shall be securely anchored to stud walls. Doors must withstand 120 psf inward
and 140 psf outward pressures, in additional to missile impacts. The rough door
opening should be framed with at least two studs fastened together or laminated on both
sides of the opening.
DOOR
Use 1-1/2" laminated plywood door with 11 ga. (t0.1196)
in. Min.) steel plate attached to the outside with screws at 6" O.C. around perimeter of door.
Alternate: Use 16 ga. Hollow metal door with 11 ga. steel plate attached with
metal screws at 6" O.C. around perimeter. Either swing doors shall be provided with through
bolted slide bolts top and bottom equal to Glenn Johnson #1718-t.
(Note: a sliding door may be substituted for a swinging door. When closed, the sliding door shall
be supported continuously at head and jamb. Door must resist both inward and outward pressure as well as missile impacts.)
ANCHORAGE
Walls shall be anchored to existing slab or foundation. See details on
drawings. Provide 1/2 anchor bolts
@ l'-4" O.C. epoxy anchors preferred. Expansion bolts acceptable. Other equivalent methods of anchorage are acceptable.
VENTING
Provide a minimum of 0.5 sq.ft. opening in roof or wall for venting purposes. Openings shall be
protected so that debris cannot pass through and strike an occupant of the shelter. |
