Air Infiltration

What would you do if you had a hole in the middle of an entry door this big? Well, you'd get out and fix it immediately, wouldn't you? And yet a whole lot of people have a gap around entry doors, and if it's as much as a 16th of an inch all the way around the average door, it's going to be the equivalent of a whole in the door this size.

Now, when you start adding up all of the entry doors and all the windows, that amount to a lot of infiltration, that means a lot of energy loss. How do you find out whether you've got this problem or not? It's real simple. You take a hair dryer and candle, and we'll show you what to do.

Just turn your hair dryer on . Start at a fixed position. Al will be on the inside with the candle. He's going to be watching to see if the candle flickers. Just move it up the door.where he can follow along inside. If he sees the candle flicker, then you do have a problem.

And the flickering will tell you exactly where you need to do some work. Either replace the old weather stripping or put some new stuff in there. And if it's a fixed joint around a window, let's say, do some caulking. But caulking and weather-stripping can save you a lot of money, because they stop that air infiltration. And if you do that, you'll be able to stick these bucks in your pocket instead of sending them to the utility company.
