Architectural Salvage

Michael Holigan: A number of people say they don't build homes the way that they used to. You’re right, they’re much more energy efficient, they’re safer, plus they’ve made big steps in appliances and other features. But, what most people are missing is the old craftsmanship that used to be in homes. And you’re right, that has changed quite a bit. We’ve got someone who can add some of that craftsman ship back. We’ve got Blake Hargrove with HMI Architectural here. Good to have you here, Blake.

Blake Hargrove: Thank You.

MH: Tell me about this mantle piece. It looks great and how old is it?

BH: This piece is probably turn of the century, maybe 1890s. It’s an English piece in oak and has exquisite carvings in it and mill work on it.

MH: You’ve got a great store and yard here just filled with items from homes from the past. What do most people buy if they are going to add to their new home?

BH: Almost every home has at least 2 architectural elements. They’ve got the front door, which sets the tone for the rest of the house. And in their central living space many homes have a fireplace and there... the mantle does much the same for that environment, it really sets the tone.

MH: How much of your sales here are for new homes and how much are for existing homes?

BH: Over half of our sales go to customers building new homes that desire a piece of architecture history in their brand new home.

MH: They just want that classic look. If someone is looking for a place like this, where would they start?

BH: You can start out by just trying junk yards. Most good junk yards have some architectural which can be cherry-picked out of them. Another possible location is antique shops and malls. The selection is going to be limited there. And your final option really is to check demolition sites.
