Michael Holigan: For a lot of homeowners, nothing beats cooking outdoors on a grill. And built-in gas grills like this are becoming much more common in America's backyard. This one has all the bells and whistles, including a rotisserie, a third burner for cooking that meat, plus back here a place to put chips to smoke and add flavor. And over here even a side burner where you can do vegetables. Now, installing this whole gas grill system took less than one day, including the brick enclosure. Let me show you how we did it. Marlon, I know you've installed a lot of these built-in grills. What's the first thing we really need to watch for? Marlon White: Well, the first thing we need to do is get the layout of how the shelf space is going to work and everything. MH: Okay. MW: Well, we have a side burner in a tight space. MH: Oh, a separate piece, yeah. MW: We have to make sure that we have enough room to set things. MH: Do you always start at the back? Is that pretty common? MW: Well, we need to start in the back, yes, because we have to match the bond on the house. MH: Okay, the bond is the pattern of the brick on the house? MW: Right. MH: With a little practice you may get comfortable chopping bricks, like Marlon does to fit spaces at the edges and corners that need less than a whole brick. But you can use a masonry saw as well. Well, we've got our gas line in, and we'll drop in the side burner and go ahead and mount our main grill. Just like the main cabinet and side burner, all the individual parts of the grill are easy to set in. And they're firmly anchored in place by their own weight. That's going to make it easy to take the whole grill apart when you're cleaning or making repairs later on. Well, as you can see, our project looks great. Gas grills range anywhere from about $200 up to several thousand dollars. This is really a mid-range unit. We have about $1,400 in the unit, plus the side burner and the rotisserie. But like I said, the results turned out great. I'm Michael Holigan - About the House. |
