Base Trim

Michael Holigan: In homes that cost millions of dollars you're always going to find special attention to detail, whether it be faux finishes or big marble floors, and especially around the trim. You're always going to find very large, tall base trim made up of multiple pieces. It adds elegance to any formal room. But it's actually a project that you can do yourself. Let me show you how.

The first thing we want to do after putting our main piece of trim down is put a level on top of it and see how we look. We definitely want to get this level. Looks pretty good. Let's go ahead and tack a few nails in place just to hold it up. Wherever two boards come together we're going to cut a 45-degree angle so it makes a nice splice, and it'll be less noticeable to the eye after we paint the trim. We set our blade for a 45-degree angle, so all we've got to do is just cut. Let's see how our piece fits here. Oh yeah, that'll be fine. Well, believe it or not, we've already done the hard part now that our base is leveled up and nailed down. We've just got to put some 45's in our top piece and in our quarter round and start nailing them on. The last step of the project is to caulk all gaps in the wood, and then paint the trim.

The finished project shows it's a wonderful way to make an average room outstanding. And as we've shown you adding beautiful base molding is not hard to do. You can actually do the project in an afternoon and it's not expensive. Whether you own a $50,000 house or one that cost over a million dollars, you can add beauty and elegance to any room in your home.
