Anti-Tip Bracket

Michael Holigan: Boys will be boys, and they won't always consider the dangers when reaching for their toys. As you can imagine if this happened in your home, the results could be very tragic. There's a very easy way to prevent this, and you probably have all the parts. They should've come in your stove and oven when you purchased it or when you bought your new home. It's called an anti-tipping bracket.

On most stoves it takes less than 30 minutes to install and should provide a lifetime of protection. How the bracket actually works is you mount it to the wood plate on the bottom of your wall with screws, and then the leg of your stove actually slides underneath it when you slide the unit back in place. That way no matter how much pressure you put on the front, it can't pull up.

Now, if you need to work behind the stove you just slide it back out - no problem. If your stove fits snugly between the cabinets, you probably won't even need to measure. Just place the bracket flat on the ground, touching both the cabinet and wall. Most brackets have holes for four screws. Try to anchor the bracket into the baseplate of the wood frame using all four screws. Now, push the stove back into place. The stove leg should slip right into the bracket and secure it. As you can see, the unit is now safe, and it won't tip over. It was a very easy job to do.

If you don't know where your anti-tip bracket is, call the manufacturer of your stove and oven and ask them to send one to you or stop by any home center.
