We’re using a state-of-the-art soft foam insulation in the walls of the Project House. It’s
called Icynene, and it’s something you really have to see to believe.
Icynene is sprayed between the wall studs as a liquid, and within ten seconds of
application, turns into a foam that expands to 100 times its volume. Because of this unique
feature, Icynene foam is able to penetrate and seal all crevices and holes. This is especially
effective in those areas where the shell of the house has been penetrated by plumbing and
electrical connections.
Icynene insulation bonds to the material upon which it is sprayed. For that reason,
it’s a great application for areas in the Project House such as the joists that support
the second floor. Gravity won’t pull it away from the areas that need to be insulated.
Because Icynene foam acts as a complete air barrier, it locks out dust, allergens, odors
and other pollutants. The manufacturers stress that Icynene also prevents mold and mildew.
Sound Insulation
Because of Icynene’s unique foam structure, it acts as an incredibly efficient sound
insulator. This feature makes it ideal for outside walls and even interior walls in places
such as media and utility rooms. Plus, the plumbing in the walls of the average house can
be a significant contributor to noise in a home interior, and Icynene insulation is very
effective at cutting down on the transfer of plumbing noise.
Icynene insulation meets federal Energy Star® mortgage requirements, and comes with a
Limited Lifetime Warranty.
