Kitchen Cabinets A large, growing family will occupy this year's Project House when it's finished, and we wanted to make sure that the cabinetry that we install will look great, and will also accommodate their various needs in the indoor kitchen, the outdoor kitchen, the playroom, the study, the media center, the utility room and the six bathrooms. To accomplish this, we worked with Armstrong Cabinets.

Cabinets Choices Robb Glenn of Armstrong Cabinets designed the Project House cabinet ensemble, and every step of the way, he kept in mind both stylish design and day-to-day functionality. We had a wide range of styles and materials to choose from within the Armstrong Cabinets product line, including oak, maple, cherry, birch, alder, plantation hardwood, thermofoil and laminates.

The construction of the cabinets is noteworthy. All the cabinets in the house are all-plywood box construction - no particle board - and provide vastly superior strength and durability to cabinets made of less hardy materials.

Drawers The drawer sides are extra-thick 5/8 inch plywood with dovetail joinery. Industry standard is half-inch. An interesting and appealing functional design feature is the under-mounted drawer guide system, which puts the guides out of sight.

Armstrong Cabinets in the Kitchen

The kitchen cabinets are maple, with a gorgeous Toffee finish and stainless steel knobs and pulls to match the stainless steel appliances, with an arch door design to match the door archways that lead from the kitchen into the adjoining common rooms.

The cabinetry in and around the kitchen island is designed with a lot of easily accessible storage and workspace, with deep pots and pans drawers built in, as well as a special plasticware cabinet under the built-in microwave oven. On the "non cooking" side of the island, there is plenty of under-counter knee room so kids and guests can sit on bar stools and visit, or pitch in and prepare food.

Rope moulding All appliances are integrated into the cabinetry. Rope moulding is stacked between the crown, adding a striking designer touch, and over-moulding lights highlight the cabinets and pull the eye upward.

The desk area in the kitchen is perfect for doing bill-paying, bookkeeping or other chores while the food is cooking, with plenty of shelf space for cookbooks or home-office materials. The area is wired for phone and high-speed Internet access, and is an extremely inviting location for a visitor to inhabit while the homeowner continues with meal preparation.

Lazy Susan The cabinets are designed for ultimate accessibility and maximum utilization of space. For example, the corner cabinets are equipped with Lazy Susan shelving that puts and end to the knee-bruising, back-straining, flashlight-requiring contortions that have traditionally accompanied homeowner interaction with corner cabinetry.

Other Notable Areas

Entertainment Center The cabinets in the entertainment center match the kitchen cabinetry, since the two rooms join. Here, we've ordered cabinetry to dimensions that perfectly fit a specific large screen television that the homeowner knew beforehand would be the centerpiece of the entertainment center. The "flush to the screen" surrounding cabinetry provides a stunning effect and wastes no space whatsoever.

In the outdoor grill kitchen, we knew that standard wood cabinetry would not be appropriate. Although the kitchen area is covered, these cabinets are going to be exposed to the elements all year long. We installed white thermofoil cabinets that won't warp and can withstand cleaning, even with solvents and mild abrasives. The cabinets are designed to accommodate lots of paper cups, napkins, barbecue utensils and holiday items.

Children's Study Area Upstairs, there's a children's study area that is fully furnished with mirror-image desks, drawers and wall cabinetry that can meet the needs of two children or young adults right through high school.

The laundry room cabinets match the color theme of the other downstairs cabinets, providing a full wall of cabinetry, with room to store enough laundry detergent, towels and cleaning supplies for a large extended family. Because there's so much storage space in the laundry room, there's a place for everything and there's no need to ever be embarrassed for visitors to see this essential workspace.

The master bath has beautiful cabinets that match the neutral colors of the tile and countertops, with his and her vanity heights, and his and her storage space.
