We're putting 19 tons of heating and cooling capacity into our 6,000 square foot Project House. We wanted to install a top-quality, energy efficient and reliable system, so we went with a QuietComfort™ system from HEIL Heating and Cooling Products.

Indoor Units

HVAC Five tons (one 3-ton and one 2-ton QuietComfort™ II, 80V Series two-stage variable-speed gas furnaces) will feed the upstairs of the house, which will be divided into three individual "zones". Each zone will be regulated by its own thermostat, which will activate a motorized damper built into the ductwork. This thermostat-controlled, damper-based zoning system will ensure that the air flow and temperature in the upstairs is always balanced, and that the system is always operating at maximum efficiency.

Downstairs, we'll have two four-ton single zone QuietComfort™ systems, one three-ton single zone system and one two-ton single zone system.

For reference, each "ton" is equal to 12,000 British Thermal Units (BTU's). A BTU is the amount of heating or cooling energy required to raise or lower the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

Most of the furnaces in existing homes only run at one speed-full blast. They heat up quickly, then shut down, leaving uncomfortable hot and cold spots around the home. However, 90% of the time, "full blast" is not needed, wasting precious energy.

Furnace A two-stage variable-speed gas furnace, on the other hand, senses the heating and cooling needs of the home at the current time, and is able to adapt its operation to meet those requirements. The gas furnace has high and low burning stages, and the variable speed circulation motor adjusts the flow of air to match the needs of the house. This can save up to 75% in electricity costs over furnaces equipped with conventional blower motors. The gas furnace operates at an energy-saving 80% Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE)-a significant improvement over older-style furnaces, many of which achieve an AFUE of only 60 to 65%.

Additionally, in the primary operational stage, the variable-speed circulation motor's lower speed, and the burners' reduced input rate result in significantly lower noise levels. *

Outdoor Units

Condenser Unit The energy efficiency for an air-conditioner and the cooling side of a heat pump are shown by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The SEER indicates how much cooling you receive from each watt of electricity you use on a seasonal basis. The higher a unit's SEER, the higher its efficiency. Using the SEER, you can easily compare the efficiency of different units. For example, if Unit A's SEER is 10 and Unit B's SEER is 5, Unit A is twice as efficient as Unit B and will cost approximately half as much to operate.

Our outdoor condensing units are HEIL 14 SEER QuietComfort™ air conditioners. These units greatly exceed the governments minimum energy efficiency standard. In fact, when matched with the indoor HEIL units, the system operates at an exceptional 15 SEER.

Condenser coil The condenser coil in the QuietComfort™ 14 Series, uses durable copper tubing and aluminum fins, which provide greater energy efficiency and cost savings than units which use coils and fins made of lesser materials.

The compressor is a scroll compressor, which uses no pistons and only two moving parts, so it runs more efficiently than standard compressors. This makes the unit quieter and more reliable than standard compressors.
